Amanda Seyfried is the reason she turned down “Galaxy Guardians”: “I thought it would be Marvel’s first bomb.”

Amanda Safried spoke honestly about why she turned down a portion of Gamora in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Starring in Josh Horowitz’s happy, sad, confused podcast, Safried explained that while she was seriously considering taking on the role, she couldn’t shake her as a reality of commitment.

Seyfried referenced the X-Men franchise. The X-Men franchise had undergone a long, infamous makeup process that many of its stars were. “I didn’t want to suffer from work,” she said. “I sat there for four and a half hours each morning and every night didn’t seem to be fun.”

She recalls meeting Guardian director James Gunn in person and describes the experience as “great.” However, she said there was some confusion later about whether the offer actually happened. “It seems that someone said he didn’t remember it or that it wasn’t true,” she said, “and it seemed to be waiting for a moment. It’s definitely true. I definitely received an offer for it.

The location was a different matter. Safried was not keen to move for a long time, explaining that he “didn’t want to live in London for six months a year.” Almost at the same time, she was offered a role in Seth MacFarlane’s comedy West in a million ways to die in the West, and ultimately won. “It felt like a really good opportunity,” she said.

Perhaps the biggest factor was the uncertainty about whether the Guardian factions of the Galaxy actually functioned. “Remember, remember that it’s part of a Marvel movie. This is the first Marvel movie in the bomb. “I thought it was about talking trees and talking raccoons, it would be Marvel’s first bomb, and Chris Pratt and I would never work again. I was wrong.”

Looking back at that perspective, she added, “I’m not just smart, I’m not brave.”

What about regrets? There’s nothing in Safried. “I don’t regret the decision I made,” she said. “I made it for myself the moment I made it. It was good for me, and that’s good for me now.” She continues, saying she’s happy for those who joined the franchise, “Zoe and Chris and everyone who is part of that film had the best time and it worked for them. And I love it.

Zoe Saldaña eventually took on the role of Gamora, becoming a central part of multiple Guardians and the Avengers films in Marvel’s billion-dollar franchise.

Seyfried can now be seen appearing on Crime-Drama Series Long Bright River, based on Liz Moore’s bestselling novel.
