Disney Pixar
A sequel to Pixar’s 2017 animated hit Coco is officially underway.
The announcement was made by Disney CEO Bob Iger at Walt Disney Company’s annual shareholders meeting. According to Iger, Coco 2 is in the early stages of Pixar Animation Studios, reuniting important talent from the beloved original. Oscar-winning director Lee Unkrich (Coco, Toy Story 3) is making a direct return along with co-director Adrian Morina (Coco, Elio). Oscar-winning producer Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4, Insider Out 2) also joined the production.
“The film is in its first stage, but I know it’s full of humor, heart and adventure,” says the shareholders’ latest update. “And we can’t wait to share more immediately.” No details about the plot or cast have been released.
The original, released in 2017, followed the story of Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez), a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s long-standing music ban. Miguel finds himself in the Land of the Dead, where he embarks on a colorful journey to uncover the history and heritage of his family.
The film was a major critical and commercial success for Disney and Pixar. Coco has earned more than USD 814 million at the global box office with a reported budget of USD 175 million. The film also won two Academy Awards. This is the best animation feature and the best original song from Touching Ballad “Remember Me.”
