Netflix’s ‘Take That’ documentary trailer looks back at the band’s rise and fall

Netflix has released the official trailer for Take That, a new three-part documentary series that promises a clear-eyed look at the band’s rise, fall, and eventual reconciliation. Featuring new interviews along with archival material and unseen footage, this series revisits the moment when unprecedented success began to quietly tear the group apart. Watch the trailer above, then read on for more details.

“This series is an intimate look at the highs, heartbreaks and enduring legacy of one of the most successful bands in British history,” the synopsis reads.

This trailer leans heavily into the idea that Take That’s explosive popularity in the 1990s was also the beginning of something darker. As the crowd grew, “it was also the beginning of the end for us as a band”. The footage captures the sheer scale of their fame, from the deafening crowds to the loss of privacy that followed them everywhere.

Gary Barlow has spoken candidly about the tensions at the time, recalling the “incredible pressure” and the realization that the band had become a “money-making machine”.

The trailer also reflects on Robbie Williams’ departure from the band in 1995. Robbie Williams’ departure from the group was spotlighted in the criminal biographical musical Betterman, which depicts Williams as an anthropomorphic chimpanzee and depicts Williams’ rivalry with the band’s then-manager Nigel Martin-Smith. Within a year of Williams’ departure, Take That disbanded for good.

Behind the camera, Take That is directed by David Souter, whose previous music documentaries include Bros: After the Screaming Stops, Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All and Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell. The series is produced by Fulwell 73 (Fulwell Entertainment) and executive produced by Gabe Turner.

The three-part documentary series will premiere on Netflix on January 27th.
