The wheels no longer rotate. Prime Video pulls out the plug for the vast fantasy series The Wheel of Time. The season 3 finale currently serves as a series closing.
Based on the epic book series by Robert Jordan (and later Brandon Sanderson), the ambitious adaptation began in 2021 and was once one of Prime Video’s biggest hits. The series starring Rosamund Pike kicked off strongly. However, despite recent creative improvements, the show’s journey is over.
Viewer and Cost: A Tough Equation
The decision first reported by the deadline followed a “long deliberation” and eventually fell into finances. Creatively liked by executives and warmly accepted by critics, Season 3 currently sits at 97% with rotten tomatoes, but it appears it has failed to justify the high production costs in light of the decline of the audience.
The third season began strong, landing briefly in Nielsen’s top 10, but did not maintain the same traction as the previous run. The series still ranked number one in several countries and held a global fanbase, but Prime Video and co-producer Sony Pictures TV couldn’t find a way to go financially.
Thoughtful (if not needed) exit
Fans will not remain completely drifted away. Although you may not know the series, the team behind the show reportedly created the season 3 finale with some degree of closure in mind. Still, cancellations are naturally frustrating for fans who praised the latest episode as the series’ best.
Rafe Judkins served as a showrunner and adapted television books. The large ensemble cast included Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Josha Stradowski, Zo Robbins, Madeleine Madden, and Marcus Rutherford.
Prime Video and Sony will continue to support the third season of the show for Emmy’s consideration. This is the final victory lap of a series that many believed were just hitting that path.
And how about video games?
Interestingly, news of cancellations just a few weeks after variety reported that a Wheel of Time video game was in development. Open-World RPG is built in-house in IWOT Studios’ new gaming division with a three-year timeline for development.
“It’s an open world game, and it’s going to be all of the circle of time. Everything that’s covered in books, and all of it’s backstory elements.” “As we build the world, it’s going to be the whole world of time, it’s not limited to any region or to any particular age.”
It is currently unclear whether cancellations of television shows will affect the project.
Another Prime Video Series bites dust
Cancellations will be added to the growth list for the recently cut Prime Video Originals. Just earlier this month, the streamer x Supernatural horror series The Bondsman. In a social media video, Bacon expressed confusion and disappointment about the decision.
Bondman only premiered in April, and the circle of time was under the belt for three seasons, but both titles appear to have shifted internal strategies and cost them a toned budget.
