Danny Ramirez will not be returning for season 3 of The Last of Us. HBO plans to recast Manny’s role as the series moves into its next shift in perspective.
Danny Ramirez leaves, Manny recast
Ramirez played Manny Alvarez for four episodes in season two, sharing key scenes with Abby (Kaitlyn Deaver) as the show expanded its focus beyond Ellie’s corner of the story. As reported by Deadline and confirmed by HBO, the actor will be leaving the show ahead of Season 3 due to scheduling conflicts, and will continue his role with a new cast member.
Considering there are still plans for Abby’s world and the people around her in Season 3, Manny’s recasting isn’t all that surprising. The season 2 finale also left the impression that the series was about to do a cruel time loop, but this time through Abby’s perspective, Manny will be firmly added to the mix going forward.
Mazin also teased that the series is still done with several key players. “We haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Deaver, we haven’t seen the last of Bella Ramsey, we haven’t seen the last of Isabella Merced, and we haven’t seen the last of a lot of the people who are dead right now in the story,” he said in May, as quoted by Variety magazine.
More shake-ups behind the camera in Season 3
Ramirez’s departure comes amid major changes behind the scenes. Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the game and the series, announced in July that he would step back from writing and directing Season 3, and that Craig Mazin would continue to serve as the show’s sole showrunner, while remaining involved as co-creator and executive producer. Screenwriter Harry Gross, who helped plan both the game’s sequel, The Last of Us Part II, and the series’ second season, also said he would not be returning for the next installment.
As for Ramirez, he hasn’t exactly disappeared into the fungal fog. He is set to appear in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday, returning to Marvel as Joaquín Torres and taking on the mantle of Falcon after Captain America: Brave New World.
