Michelle Williams has joined the cast of Damien Chazelle’s next film, adding another big name to the director’s first project since 2022’s Babylon. The untitled drama already stars Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig and is expected to begin production later this year.
Chazelle wrote the screenplay, will also direct, and is co-producer with Olivia Hamilton under their Wild Chickens Productions. Paramount Pictures will distribute it.
Deadline broke the news of Williams’ casting. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the media reports that insiders believe the film will be set in a prison, and the setting has been rumored for some time.
Chazelle was reportedly considering several projects last year, including an Evel Knievel movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, but those plans stalled and he shifted his focus back to the prison project, which was in development. This is Chazelle’s fifth feature film, following Whiplash, La La Land, First Man, and Babylon, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director.
Williams, a five-time Oscar nominee, recently won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie for Dying for Sex, which also earned her an Emmy nomination. She has been quite selective in her film work in recent years, which makes this pairing with Chazelle particularly noteworthy. On the film front, her latest film was Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans (2022), and she will next be seen in the legal thriller A Place in Hell, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Andrew Scott.
