FOX has released a new trailer for Memory of a Killer, a tense crime drama series starring Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy, Dexter: Original Sin) as a professional hitman who confronts an enemy he can’t defeat: his own mind. Watch the trailer above, then read on for more details.
Patrick Dempsey plays a killer with an unreliable memory.
Dempsey plays Angelo Doyle, a man who lives two lives that were never meant to touch. On the surface, he is a copy machine salesman. In his private life, he is a hitman operating in New York, keeping his job and true identity closely hidden. The trailer quickly sets that up and begins with Angelo being asked what he’s doing while at the bar. “I sell photo copiers,” he says. The bartender retorted, “What are you really doing?”
From there, the film leans into the dangers of that double life, showing Angelo using a pistol, a sniper, and even a baseball bat to carry out his mission. His friend Dutch (Michael Imperioli, “The Sopranos”) bluntly tells him: “We do the job, we don’t ask the questions.” Dutch then warns, “Loyalty is everything.”
When Angelo receives a troubling diagnosis, his control begins to crumble. “I’m getting worse. I’m becoming more forgetful. I’m talking to the wrong people. Time is getting confusing,” Angelo says, before doctors tell him there’s nothing that can stop the disease from progressing. Angelo’s reaction was curt. “How much time do I need?”
Crime novels remade for American television
Memory of a Killer is an American adaptation of the 2003 Belgian film, also known internationally as Alzheimer’s, based on the 1985 novel De Zark Alzheimer’s by Jeff Zieraerts. Liam Neeson also led the 2022 film adaptation with the feature film Memory, directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale).
You may also be reminded of the 2023 American crime thriller film Nox Gone (also known as The Murderer’s Memory or The Assassin’s Plot in some markets), directed by and starring Michael Keaton, which follows a contract killer suffering from rapidly progressing dementia.
