‘Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair’ teaser trailer: Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and others reunite for family turmoil

Hulu has released the official teaser trailer for the upcoming revival of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Unfair, which stars Frankie Muniz returning to his iconic role. Watch the teaser above, then read on for more details.

Malcolm is back – and unfortunately for him, so is his family.

The teaser begins with an older, ostensibly calm Malcolm claiming that life is finally working out in his favor, largely because he has intentionally distanced himself from his family. “My life is great right now,” Malcolm says in the trailer. “All I had to do was get away from my family!” Of course, that peace doesn’t last long. In the fourth episode’s exclusive event, Hal and Lois demand to attend their 40th wedding anniversary party, and Malcolm is thrown back into familiar confusion.

Returning cast, new faces, and why Dewey was recast

Muniz will be joined again by Bryan Cranston as Hal and Jane Kaczmarek as Lois, while Chris Kennedy Masterson, Justin Barfield and Emmy Coligado will also reprise their roles as Francis, Reese and Piama. In this revival, a new generation will be introduced to this madness, including Keeley Kirsten as Malcolm’s daughter Leah, Vaughan Murray as his youngest brother Kelly, and Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s girlfriend Tristan. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will play Dewey, who was played by Eric Perr Sullivan in the original series.

Sullivan is the only major original cast member not to return for the role, a decision Cranston previously discussed on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast (as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter). “I talked to Eric and I said, ‘Hey, we’ve got the show! We’re coming back.'” He said, “Oh, that’s great!” And I said, “Yes, I look forward to seeing you again.” He said, “Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it.” But it’s great that you are,” Cranston said.

Cranston added that Sullivan has stepped away from acting to focus on his studies. “He’s actually going to go to Harvard,” he said. “He’s really, really smart, and I think he’s getting his master’s degree at Harvard right now. He said, ‘Oh my god, no, I haven’t acted since I was nine or something, so I’m just not interested.’

Revisiting Malcolm, this time with perspective.

Speaking to People about returning to the role, Muniz said the experience provided him with a unique foundation at this stage in his life. “When I was doing Malcolm 20 years ago, I was a kid. I was like 13 to 20 when I was on the show. I just somehow showed up, was excited to be there, said the words on the paper, and it worked,” he said.

Reflecting on the reunion, he added: “I didn’t know what it was going to be like. How easy it would be to play Malcolm, how awkward it would be to get back together with the cast…but it was like no day had passed. We all fell right back into our roles, each and every one of us. I’m talking about the first time I read it.”

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair launches on Hulu in the US on April 10th, and the series is also available internationally, including Australia, on Disney+.
