The trailer arrived for Survivors, a new Australian mystery drama series heading to Netflix on June 6th. Based on Jane Harper’s bestselling novel, the six-part series unfolds in an unforgettable, beautiful coastal town in the Tasmanian town.
The series stars Charlie Vickers (the Ring of Power) as Kieran Elliott and Yellin Ha (Bridgerton). But Evelyn Bay is not a town that he forgets, and as the body of a young woman washes land, the past quickly raises her head. The shocking discovery threatens to reveal what actually happened in the owner’s death of two young men and the loss of a girl 15 years ago.
“I often describe the show as a Trojan horse,” showrunner Tony Ayers says in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “It’s a family melodrama disguised as a murder mystery, because what really comes to mind is a son who wants his mother’s love and a mother who can’t afford to give it because her whole world might fall apart.”
Ayres, known for his work at ClickBait and Stateless, says the survivors don’t just reveal the killer. “The themes of sadness and loss are things I have danced over my entire career,” he says. “It felt like a very strong center of the show’s theme. But I’m also conscious of the need to give the audience a foothold.” Harper’s book, Ayres, says, “She creates footholds in classic murder mystery, allowing people to use Whodunit’s framework to experience a lot of emotions.”
The fictional Evelyn Bay, filmed on the neck of Tasmania’s Eagle Hawk, is a character in itself. “It’s a cliff and sea cave, this pounding ocean. It’s really so spectacular,” Ayers says. “There’s a huge emotional development in this big landscape. That’s why Tasmania is working very well. It’s on an emotionally operatic scale.”
The ensemble cast includes Robin Malcolm, Jessica De Gu, Miliama Smith, Johnny Kerr, George Mason, Damian Garvey, Shannon Berry and more.
Survivors will premiere on Netflix on June 6th.
