Netflix has released the official teaser trailer for Apex, which plunges Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton into a brutal game of survival set deep in the Australian wilderness. Watch the teaser above and read more.
The cruel cat-and-mouse game of Australian wildlife
Apex, directed by Baltasar Kormakur (Everest, Beast), stars Theron as a grieving woman who retreats to the Australian wilderness in search of solitude. She heads to the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, where she becomes embroiled in a ruthless game of cat and mouse with a serial killer played by Egerton (with an Australian accent). The teaser gives us a glimpse of the tense chase as Theron tries to survive and fight back against Egerton’s relentless pursuers.
“You’re playing a game, aren’t you? Is that what you think we’re doing?” a hurt Theron asks Hunter. “I guess I was right,” he said, clearly enjoying himself.
When filming began, Kormakul told Tudum that the landscape was an important part of the film’s DNA. “In a film like Apex, where the elements and terrain are as big a looming character as the movie stars fighting within them, no other country in the world could replace Australia as a major filming location.”
The wilderness was lensed by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lawrence Sher, whose credits include Joker, the Hangover trilogy, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Charlize Theron pushed herself to her physical limits
Although Theron is well known for her action talent, she told People that preparing for Apex required far more extreme physical training than fight choreography. “In this case, I was climbing a lot. I was climbing almost every day,” she said. “And when I got to Australia, I kayaked a lot. It’s a massive workout. I climb all the real mountains in the movie, so I get as strong as I can. I’m climbing all of them — and I’m climbing barefoot and on my own.”
Theron revealed that the role was also her first experience with serious climbing. “When I was a child in Africa, I had never climbed anything but a tree,” she said. “It’s amazing. It’s so much fun.”
Kormakur echoed that determination, telling People, “It was so interesting to watch Charlize transform and take on the different challenges the role required. From an avid barefoot mountaineer to a great kayaker, to swimming through crazy rivers, not to mention fighting for your life. We decided not to take any shortcuts and just dig in and overcome them. And she certainly did.”
Egerton gets a haircut, Theron finally gives Eric Bana the job
Egerton, who appears in the teaser with a shaved head as Theron’s character stalks, admitted that the look has its own charm. “I was so excited to no longer have to worry about what my hair looked like every day,” the actor said.
Although Eric Bana does not appear in the teaser, Theron confirmed that he plays her character’s on-screen partner and said the film is a long-awaited collaboration. “I have been trying to work with Eric for over 20 years,” she said. “We were literally touring each other’s projects and it never worked out, so this was a no-brainer. I immediately stepped in and thought, ‘Eric has this role,’ and he was kind enough to come and join us for three weeks. He’s great in the movie.”
