Filming on Red, White & Royal Wedding, the long-awaited sequel to Amazon MGM Studios’ 2023 hit romantic comedy Red, White & Royal Blue, is officially underway. Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez announced the start of production through a behind-the-scenes video shared on social media.
In a short promo posted on the film’s official account, the couple greets fans from the set, before answering the question that has been hanging over the sequel ever since the title was revealed: whose wedding is it? It depicts how the question is answered.
It’s not a wedding
Despite months of fan speculation, Galitzine and Zakhar Perez revealed in a video that “Red, White, Royal Wedding” will not center around Prince Harry and Alex Claremont-Diaz’s wedding.
“Oh, we wanted to say we’re here for Bea’s wedding,” Zakhar Perez explained of Princess Beatrice, Henry’s sister. Galitzin quickly clarified jokingly, urging fans not to be confused, and then bluntly added that Zakhar Peres “is not married.” Galitzine jokes that such a moment is “a long time away.”
Why did fans assume otherwise?
The assumption that the sequel will feature Alex and Henry’s wedding largely stems from the bonus chapter included in the Red, White, and Royal Blue Collector’s Edition. Set several years after the events of the original novel, this chapter sees the couple firmly engaged and making plans for their future together, a detail that, combined with the sequel’s title, naturally set expectations in a certain direction.
Unlike the first film, which was strictly an adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s best-selling novel, Red, White and the Royal Wedding does not have a direct sequel. In the absence of a fixed source, follow-up information is intentionally left opaque, leaving fans to fill in the gaps themselves. Now, whether the casting explanation is a true reset of expectations or mild misdirection… it’s still part of the plot.
What we know so far
So far, only Galitzine and Zakhar Perez have been officially confirmed to be returning, reprising their roles as Prince Harry and Alex Claremont-Diaz. Sarah Shahi has also been confirmed to be involved, but there is no official word yet on the return of Ellie Bamber, Uma Thurman, Rachel Hilson or Clifton Collins Jr.
Jamie Babbitt (Gilmore Girls, Only Murders in the Building) is directing the sequel from a script by Gemma Burgess, Matthew Lopez and McQuiston. Lopez, who wrote and directed the previous film, will remain on board as a producer, with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter returning through their Berlanti Schechter Films. McQuiston and Michael Constable will serve as executive producers.
Although a release date has not been announced, Red, White and the Royal Wedding is expected to arrive on Prime Video in 2026.
