The official trailer for The Mortuary Assistant, the new horror movie based on the 2022 video game of the same name, has arrived. One woman, one morgue, and a hellish night that spirals out of control. Watch the trailer above, then read on for more details.

Night shift with rules for survival

Mortuary Assistant follows Rebecca Owens (Willa Holland, “Arrow”), a newly certified mortician who takes on the overnight shift to embalm bodies alone during off-hours. It’s supposed to be a simple job, but the trailer makes it clear that Rebecca’s first night on the job is anything but routine.

Paul Sparks (House of Cards) plays Raymond, Rebecca’s mentor who gives her some early creepy guidance. “I know what you went through was terrifying, but you need to listen to me if you want to survive. The entity will do anything to gain control,” he warns. He then suggests an important rule. “To banish a demon to hell, you need to remember its name.”

It’s also clear that Rebecca’s grasp of reality is under pressure. In one moment we see a demonic being strangling her, but in the next shot we see that it is Rebecca herself, wrapping her hands around her throat.

The trailer leans heavily into unsettling imagery, including demonic visuals, disfigured bodies, and flashes of nods that fans of the game will instantly recognize. Here’s the trailer for the Definitive Edition of the game:

director and screenwriter

“The Morgue Assistant” was directed by Jeremiah Kipp, known for the 2021 indie horror film “Slapface,” based on his own short story of the same name. The script was written by Tracy Beebe and Brian Clark, creators of the original game. The film was produced by Epic Pictures’ horror label Dredd in association with Traverse Media and Jacob P. Heineke.

“Watching ‘The Morgue Assistant’ make the leap from game to film has been incredibly rewarding,” Clark said in a statement, as quoted by Deadline. “Fans of the game will finally witness the world they’ve explored come to life, while genre film audiences will discover a story full of tension, dark secrets, and unforgettable horror. This is a unique crossover that bridges two communities of horror fans in the way I’ve always imagined.”

release date

The Mortuary Assistant will be released in U.S. theaters on February 13, 2026, and then streamed on Shudder starting March 27.
