Oscar winners Ellen Burstin and Taiika Waitty are working together for the latest feature of Hungarian filmmaker Cornell Mundrucci (Women’s Piece). Filming is scheduled to begin this month at Disney Studios Australia in Sydney, and is supported by the NSW NSW Fund screen.
Written by longtime Mundruczó collaborator Kata Wéber, the location focuses on the unlikely friendship between an older woman played by Burstyn and a middle-aged man played by Waititi. The two set out on a journey from Chicago to New York, bringing the lost race pigeon back home. And in true road movie fashion it’s not about destinations.
Burstyn – 92, and although he’s only a number to prove, he’s returned to Australia for filming. “I’m still amazed and pleased to work at my age,” she said. “And I’m excited to go on this ‘road trip’ with Taika and Cornell. Returning to beautiful Australia is certainly a special treat. ”
Waititi, best known for his filmmaking (Tall: Ragnarok, JoJo Rabbit) and comedy acting turn (our flag means death, we’re in the shadows), says he’s stepping into new territory. “This is different from every role I’ve ever done,” he said. “And I’ve always adored Ellen’s work.”
He also shared why the story hit close to home. “It was me and my mother who grew up in New Zealand. This little dynamic duo for this world. When this role came in, I thought, ‘Oh, what a goddamn, I was like, ‘Oh my god, I was like, ‘We’re both going for decades a night and Ellen will be my Louise Thelma.’ Although we still don’t fully know which of us will drive off the cliff in this scenario.”
Mundruczó – Previous works include the 2014 dog eating drama White God and the 2020 Vanessa Carby-led female work (also starring Burston). “Location is the absurdity of how people will no longer look like in their own life over time,” he said. “But losing visibility doesn’t necessarily mean losing ourselves. In fact, it can lead us and the people we meet to a deeper understanding.”
“I had a desire to appoint the legendary Ellen Burstin to lead,” Mundrucho added, speaking of reuniting with the Oscar winner. I hope that in the extremely talented Taika Waititi you have found the perfect accomplice in this exciting journey. ”
The film is produced by Jomon Thomas (Monkey Man, Hotel Mumbai), Megan Wynn (together with Poker Face), and Alexander Rodnyansky (Loveless, Bean Pole). WME Independent handles international sales.
No release date has been announced due to the location.
The deadline was the first to break the news.
