Screenwriter Steven Knight quits Daisy Ridley movie

There was another commotion in the Force. Screenwriter Steven Knight has left the Star Wars film about Daisy Ridley’s character Rey following the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

In March 2023, Variety exclusively reported that Knight had signed on to the project, replacing original screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Lucasfilm is actively talking with potential screenwriters to write the story, which is said to chronicle Rey’s efforts to found a new Jedi Academy, but delays have meant production is at least as likely as It is unlikely to start until 2025.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still attached to direct this film, which will be her feature debut. She previously directed an episode of the Disney+ series “Ms.” Obaid-Chinoy was talking about her latest documentary about designer Diane von Furstenberg, which premiered on Hulu in June, after winning two Oscars for Best Short Documentary for “Star Wars.” “What I’m most interested in is Rey’s journey as a female Jedi,” she told Variety. Meanwhile, Knight has exerted a great deal of creative power in film and television, including writing the screenplay for the upcoming Maria Callas biopic Maria, co-starring Angelina Jolie, and the BBC hit co-starring Cillian Murphy. He has also written the script for the feature film version of the Peaky Blinders series. He has produced series for FX (“The Veil”), Disney+ (“A Thousand Blows”) and BBC (“This Town”).

The next Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau, is scheduled for release in May 2026. Disney has two more Star Wars movies scheduled for December 2026 and December 2027, but the titles have not yet been announced. At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration event in London, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced that in addition to Obeid-Chinoy’s film, the company is also working on director James Mangold’s (Indiana Jones Dial”) and Lucasfilm chief Dave Filoni announced that they are developing the film. Creative officer and executive producer of the Disney+ series “Ahsoka” and “The Mandalorian.”
