Hulu on Thursday released the trailer for “Faraway Downs,” a six-episode limited series culled from Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s 2008 film “Australia.”
Luhrmann reimagined the film’s additional footage and expanded the picture into a miniseries.
The series features a new ending and soundtrack, but follows the same premise as its predecessor.
The story is set in northern Australia before World War II and revolves around Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), a British aristocrat who inherits a large cattle farm. When her land is threatened, Lady Ashley teams up with a cattleman named Drover (Hugh Jackman) to drive cattle across the country’s wild lands to protect her ranch. .
The story is explored through the eyes of Nula (Brandon Walters), a biracial Indigenous Australian child caught up in the government’s harsh racial policies, now known as the “Stolen Generations”.
“The Australian movie has a life of its own, but this story had a different story to tell. There were different layers, nuances, and even different plot twists that the episodic format allowed us to explore. ” Rahman said when the project was announced in June 2022.
“Painted from the same material, Faraway Downs is a new variation of Australia for audiences to discover.”
The series will be executive produced by Luhrmann, Katherine Martin, Skylar Weiss, and Katherine Knapman. Disney’s 20th Television is producing the series.
The world premiere will be held on October 21st, the final night of the inaugural SXSW Sydney Screen Festival.
“Faraway Downs” premieres November 26th on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ and Star+ internationally.
