Director Baz Luhrmann reimagines Australian film as TV miniseries

Acclaimed director Baz Luhrmann will release a feature-length version of his hit film ‘Australia’, with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman returning to star in the extended cut version of ‘Faraway Downs’, which has been adapted into a TV show. do.

Director Luhrmann will return to Australia for the world premiere of the film at the SXSW Sydney 2023 Screen Festival on Saturday, October 21st.

After spending the past 30 years in the glitterati of Hollywood, the return to Australia marks a full-circle moment for the acclaimed director, who most recently worked on the global box office hit Elvis! .

“I’m honored to be making the world premiere of Faraway Downs in Australia, a place that has inspired me and my work throughout my life,” Luhrmann told Variety Australia.

What is Australia a movie about?

Australia offers a vivid insight into what the country was like before World War II, as Nicole Kidman plays British aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley, who owns the farm she inherited at Faraway Downs. It follows the journey to Australia to obtain it.

When tensions over valuable land rise and her husband is murdered, Drover (Hugh Jackman) and Nula (Brandon Walters) become the key to transporting 2,000 head of cattle to Darwin to be sold to the Australian military. .

Faraway Downs is the title of a 2023 TV miniseries that reimagines the film Australia, and Luhrmann credits the success of streaming as an inspiration.

“The world of streaming is reinvigorating episodic storytelling, which inspired me to re-approach my film ‘Australia’ to create ‘Faraway Downs,'” explains Luhrmann. did.

“With over 2 million feet of original film, my team and I were able to revisit the core themes of the film.”
