As Hollywood gears up for its biggest night: the Oscars, the Razzies step in to recognize the year’s most… questionable cinematic endeavors.
Now in its 45th year, the Golden Raspberry Awards are voted on by more than 1,200 critics, film fans and journalists from around the world, representing 49 states and multiple countries. These voters once again put the spotlight on the year’s most critically panned films and performances.
This year’s front-runners in the infamous worst picture category include Borderlands, Joker: Folie à Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis, and Regan. These films each received six nominations, tied for the most nominated dubious titles. These films also rank high in the worst director category, with Jerry Seinfeld (director of Netflix’s Unfrosted) ranking alongside Francis Ford Coppola (Megalopolis).
Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga (Joker: Folie à Deux), Cate Blanchett (Borderlands) and Ariana DeBose (Argyle and Craven the Hunter) is listed as an acting candidate. Jon Voight is already a household name at the Razzie Awards, receiving critical acclaim for his performances in multiple projects including “Reagan” and “Megalopolis.” Other notable mentions include Seinfeld’s performance in Unfrosted, Jennifer Lopez’s appearance in Atlas, Eli Roth’s direction in the video game adaptation Borderlands, and Joker: Foley. Examples include the screenplay for “A Deux.” “Kraven the Hunter” and “Rebel Moon 2” are in the prequel, remake, ripoff, and sequel categories, and “The Complete Cast of Megalopolis” is up for the Worst Screen Combo Razzie Award.
All Razzie Awards winners (losers?) will be announced on March 1st. And they timed it well. It’s the night before the Oscars.
