Volume 1 of the final season of Stranger Things has arrived, and creators Matt and Ross Duffer (aka the Duffer brothers) have revealed one of the most personal Easter eggs yet: a real-life high school drama teacher.
In a recent Instagram post, director Ross Duffer revealed that Hope Hines Love will be playing Miss Harris, a key new character for Season 5. Hope Hines Love is a teacher who supported the brothers long before Hawkins, Upside Down, or Netflix.
“Miss Harris is played by Hope Hines Love. She was my high school drama teacher. High school was a difficult time for me and my brother.
“But Hope saw things in us that we didn’t see in ourselves. And she gave us the confidence to not only survive those four years, but to move to Los Angeles and pursue our dreams. Shout out to all the teachers who are making a difference. And please… let’s prioritize the arts in our schools. ✌️”
From classroom leader to Hawkins hero
In the first volume of Season 5, Love’s Miss Harris is introduced as Holly Wheeler’s teacher at Hawkins Elementary School. She is the calm, down-to-earth, adult presence in this story, and predictably cannot maintain her composure for long. Miss Harris witnesses Holly chatting with Mr. Watshit, an imaginary friend who is ignored by her family, but Mike and Nancy realize that the presence surrounding their sister is actually Henry, aka Vecna.
As the threat escalates, Ms. Harris is drawn deeper into the chaos and does what any good teacher would do: try to protect her students when everything goes wrong. In Volume I, she accompanies Holly’s class as it is transported to the MAC-Z bunker, becoming part of the front line of adults trying to keep children safe as monsters and military affairs collide.
The Duffers’ full-circle moment
The casting resonated with fans and fellow actors, with social media comments praising both the character and the real-life teacher behind her. This is a lovely way for the Duffers to show their appreciation. It gives the woman who encouraged early creativity a place in the world she helped reach.
All four episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 Volume I (the first chapter of the show’s final episode) are currently streaming on Netflix. Episodes 5-7 will be released as Volume 2 on December 25th, and the final episode will end on December 31st.
