Yes, HBO’s “The Penguin” is as great as the reviews say

HBO

HBO has more DC shows in the works, which are the polar opposite of James Gunn’s Peacemaker, which they previously offered. It’s The Penguin, a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ non-DCU, non-DCEU film The Batman, and it features Colin Farrell’s Penguin in a supporting role. Now he’s trying to get 10 times the screen time that Robert Pattinson’s Bruce/Bat got in this movie.

The show originally aired on Thursday, but has since been moved to Sunday as part of HBO’s “premium” programming that night, which previously featured House of the Dragon. And yes, it deserves that slot. Spoilers follow.

So far, The Penguin is far from an actual superhero movie, a pure mob drama dealing with the aftermath of the Riddler flooding Gotham, and we’re sure Batman isn’t going to take care of it on his own. . There was also a cameo appearance. After Falcone Sr.’s death, there is a power struggle in the underworld, and the show begins with Oz shockingly executing his successor, his son, simply because he laughed at his dreams of becoming a respected gangster.

The show then turns into a strange buddy drama, with Penguin recruiting a child to help him with his new plan rather than executing Penguin as a witness to Falcone’s body disposal. Apparently he wants a disciple. Now Penguin plays both the Falcone and Moronite sides, and with a surprisingly brilliant plan, he escapes responsibility for the murder by the end of the episode.

W.B.

I know we saw him do this in Batman, but underneath the makeup and rubber is what has to be the most impressive prosthetic work I’ve ever seen. It’s almost hard to believe it’s Colin Farrell. You know how hard it is to create a character in a down-to-earth crowd drama who wears a fat suit and has a bunch of shitty faces? But it works, it really works, and Farrell is right here And it’s amazing. Not only is he unrecognizable in appearance, but his acting is unrecognizable and unlike anything I’ve ever seen. He looks like he’s going to be much more interesting than he was allowed to be in The Batman, and it’s easy to see why they gave him his own series now.

And although her screen time is limited, it seems clear that Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti, who was recently released from Arkham, will be a great addition to the show as well, with a penguin number and a penguin play. He is the person who understands me more than anyone else. It seems like she could be the villain of the show (well, Oz is the villain, but you get what I mean), and so far she hasn’t earned that title. Masu.

We know that James Gunn is planning a lighter version of DC compared to the DCEU and this Reeves work, but Reeves’ vision of Gotham here is the best we’ve seen yet. It’s hard to deny that it’s close. By the time it’s all said and done, there will probably be a movie trilogy, this Penguins miniseries, and at least one or two other HBO shows in production. And he and his team are 2-2, and I’d bet they could go 6-6 if given the chance.
