CBS has released the official trailer for Y: Marshals, the new Yellowstone spinoff starring Casey Dutton. Luke Grimes is a former rancher turned U.S. Marshal, heading straight back into the violence, loss, and kind of moral gray area he’s been trying to navigate for years. Watch the trailer above and read more.
Casey Dutton does it all again… again
The trailer begins with Casey reflecting on the cost of Yellowstone’s legacy. “I was fighting every day to break free from the weight of Yellowstone,” he says. “I lost my teammates, my parents, even my brother. I know good people sometimes have to do bad things, but I’m trying to find a new beginning.”
Of course, hopes for a quiet reset won’t last long. Now leading an elite U.S. Marshals task force in Montana, with his adult son Tate (Brecken Merrill) sitting next to him, Casey finds himself embroiled in a battle against cartels, violent tacticians, and the chaos brewing on the state’s fringes. The film follows Casey as he struggles with whether he can still call himself a good man amidst attacks, gunfights, fractured loyalties and ugly choices.
The trailer also includes a moment that has fans transfixed: Casey kneeling in front of a grave. It’s not clear who that person is (and the visual is accompanied by the voice of her deceased “brother”), but the omission of Kelsey Asbill from the cast list has many viewers speculating that this could be indicative of Monica’s fate. I’ve left it intentionally vague, but the atmosphere is definitely grim.
New team takes on Montana
In addition to Grimes, the series also features returning actors from Yellowstone, including Merrill as Tate, Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty as Moe, maintaining Casey’s connection to the Broken Rock Reservation.
Joining the world are Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, Ariel Kebbell as Bel Skinner, Ash Santos as Andrea Cruz, and Tatanka Means as Miles Kittle as the marshals who form Casey’s inner circle. The trailer depicts them not as sophisticated special forces, but as people with scars, trauma and families, working as Montana’s “last line of defense” in what is said to be an escalating war on violence.
Behind the Series: New Frontiers for the Franchise
Y: Marshall is joined by Taylor Sheridan, David C. Glasser, and showrunner Spencer Hudnut, with the pilot written by Hudnut and directed by Greg Yaitanes. This is one of several expanding branches of Sheridan’s ever-growing television universe following the end of its flagship Yellowstone series.
While this spinoff steers away from ranch politics and land wars, it leans heavily into action-drama territory, positioning Casey as a front-line enforcer juggling duty, loyalty, and personal grief. Whether the series confirms speculation about Monica or puts that reveal on the back burner, the trailer hints at a version of Casey driven by both duty and something darker he’s trying to outrun.
release date
Y: “Marshall” will premiere Sunday, March 1 on CBS and stream live and on-demand for Premium subscribers on Paramount+ (Next day access for Essential subscribers).
