The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical is being made into not one, but two highly anticipated films under the Universal umbrella, the first of which is expected to hit screens later this year.
Singer Ariana Grande and Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo round out the cast of both films as the witches Glinda and Elphaba, respectively.
Wicked: Part 1 is directed by In the Heights filmmaker Jon M. Chu and features a star-studded cast including Academy Award winners Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum. are also named.
A full-length trailer for the first film was released earlier this year, giving audiences their first proper look at the first part of the musical version.
Universal previously released a teaser trailer during the Super Bowl, but the second clip gives fans more insight into what’s next for Erivo’s Elphaba, Grande’s Glinda, and Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero.
Both trailers heavily tease Erivo and Grande’s rendition of Defying Gravity, but the film will also feature a new song written by original Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz.
“It’s a real honor to be able to write with Cynthia and Ariana’s voices in mind,” he recently told RadioTimes.com.

Wicked: Part 1 release date
Wicked: Part 1 has had its release date changed several times.
The film was originally scheduled to be released on November 27th, but will now be released on November 22nd, 2024.
The release date change means that the film will no longer be in direct competition with fellow musical Moana 2, but instead will be released on the same day as Ridley Scott’s long-awaited sequel to the 2000 film, Gladiator 2.
With Wicked and Gladiator 2 having the same release date and markedly different tones, could they make it into Babenheimer’s second round?
Gladiator 2 star Paul Mescal certainly hopes so, telling Entertainment Tonight: “Wickedeater isn’t really tongue-in-cheek, right? If it has the same effect as Barbie and Oppenheimer, my preference would probably be ‘Glick.'” ”
Meanwhile, if you’re wondering how long you’ll have to wait after the first movie for Part 2 to be released, Wicked: Part 2 is currently being released on Friday, November 26, 2025, almost exactly one year later. It is scheduled to be published on.
That’s definitely a longer wait than the 15 minutes between Acts 1 and 2 at the theater.
