There are a lot of boyfriends on the internet, but this year Drew Starkey is claiming the top spot on the list.
From his controversial Outer Banks character, Rafe, to wearing tiny hoop earrings and gaining new status in the fashion week crowd, the 31-year-old is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after assets. I became a person.
His latest film and first major film, Queer, is nothing more than an affirmation of his status. Buzz is rapidly growing for this new film, which stars Starkey as well as Daniel Craig, is helmed by legendary director Luca Guadagnino, and has costume designs by Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson. Frankly, it’s not surprising.
Here’s what you need to know about queer…
Queer is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs. The work is something of a sequel to his 1953 novel Junkie, which is considered both semi-autobiographical and political.
The summary of this book is as follows: “Set in Mexico City in the early ’50s, ‘Queer’ follows William Lee’s desperate pursuit of desire from bar to bar in an American expatriate setting.”
Escaping a drug raid and wandering the city’s nightlife, an American writer (played by Daniel Craig) meets a young ex-Navy man, Eugene Allerton (played by Starkey), and is instantly smitten with him.
Adding to the excitement behind this bold adaptation is director Luca Guadagnino at the helm. Guadagnino, known for his work on Call Me by Your Name and the recent hit Challengers, brings a unique touch to films that are raw, horrifying and intense from both a visual and emotional lens. .
Let’s talk about sex (queer scene)
Sex is just one part of the connection explored between Lee and Allerton in the film, but there’s certainly no shortage of it either.
Starkey told ELLE US about preparing for the scene with Craig: “I’ve never experienced a process like this before.”
“But then it became very ritualistic…and by the time we got there[to shoot]we were like, ‘Just do it.'”
For Craig, he found that the most interesting work occurred in the scenes outside the bedroom.
“I feel like the physical act is the least interesting thing. We’re all adults, this is what people do. But the only thing that’s interesting and that I think will hopefully work in this scene is , it’s an emotional journey for each character,” he told EW.
When and where can you watch Queer in Australia?
Among those who are chronically online, there’s already buzz about the film thanks to its early release in the United States. Following its premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival in September, Queer will be released in limited theaters on November 27th, followed by a US release on December 13th.
Australians will have to be a little more patient, as Queer is set to premiere at Westpac Open Air on January 29, 2025, and hit cinemas shortly thereafter.
