In many ways, we struggle with technology as much as we do, and we remain uncertain about how to effectively lead our younger generations. But for them, the stakes are much higher, and the digital world is more than just a part of their lives. It is the basis of their future.
Equip children with essential digital skills (EDS).
As adults, we have a responsibility to lead by example and stay informed and engaged about the technologies that will shape our children’s futures.
It’s time to rethink how we teach children how to use social media. If handled responsibly, it can be an outlet for creativity and play. Restricting access may seem like an easy solution, but if you want your children to thrive in the digital world, equip them with the skills to do it safely. There is a need. The real goal is to make social media a healthier, more collaborative space.
Education needs to move beyond scare tactics and a narrow focus on privacy and safety. The personal and social complexities of digital interactions must be addressed. Children need tools to protect their mental health, which is heavily influenced by comparative culture. Raising awareness and providing strategies to cope with this is essential, as well as equipping them with new social skills for the digital world in which they live.
How to empower children for a digital future.
When we asked the children to form the support they needed regarding social media, they explained some rules they wanted others to follow. Their guide, Social Media Etiquette, emphasizes the need for adult supervision and reflects their awareness of privacy risks, while at the same time highlighting the importance of promoting positive social behavior, just as in real life. Gender was also emphasized. By setting clear standards for how they behave online, they can follow the simple rules of treating others as they would like to be treated and speaking up when they feel things aren’t right. We are learning to keep our distance.
