Oscar nominated Sterling K. Brown (Paradise, American Fiction) is one of the cast and executive producers of Washington Black. The official trailer is here, teasing a mix of historical drama, scientific curiosity, and a whimsical journey of self-discovery that stretches across the continent. The trailer above and the details below.
The series, adapted from Esi Edugyan’s acclaimed novel, presents George Washington “Wash” Black, an 11-year-old boy born into slavery on the Barbados Sugar Plantation. A violent incident threatens his life and escapes with the help of Titch Wilde (Tom Ellis, Lucifer), an eccentric explorer of a flying aircraft called the Scientific Mind and Cloud Cutter, as depicted by Ernest Kingsley Jr., later written by Ernest Kingsley Jr. (World Wars Series).
Wash’s Odyssey takes him from the Caribbean to the ice shores of Nova Scotia, where he meets Medwin Harris (Sterling K. Brown), a community leader who provides protection, and eventually finds himself changed by the boy he is helping. “Through his relationship with this young man, he learns that being safe and free isn’t necessarily the same,” Brown told USA Today. “And while he tries to clean up what he needs to survive, he will wash away and show him the meaning of truly living.”
The series also stars Iola Evans in the Love Interest of Wash, Tanna Goff, Rupert Graves, Edward Brumel and Sharon Duncan Brewster. Selwyn Seyfu Hinds (writer of Paramount+’s The Twilight Zone Series) is a creator and co-showrunner alongside Kimberly Ann Harrison, with Brown also producing executive production. Edugyan is taking part as a co-producer.
Adventure, drama, romance, danger and lightness are on display. The tone Brown said is often missing in similar stories. “It’s full of whimsical elements,” he explained. “As I often say to my friends, “Black people are also whimsical!”
Brown calls the show “an epic coming-of-age story full of magic and possibilities,” highlighting its universal theme. “Everyone is growing, everyone is looking for love and community. If we are blessed enough, everyone wants to live a life of their dreams.”
