Rialto Distribution has released the official trailer for The Deb, a cheeky new Australian musical comedy that marks Rebel Wilson’s feature directorial debut. The first look leans into small-town chaos, big musical energy, and swaggering, irreverent humor, with one of its standout numbers having half the cast belting out “F*ck my life.” Watch the trailer above and read more.
Set in the drought-stricken town of Dunburn, The Fat follows farmer’s daughter Tayla Simpkins (Aftertaste’s Natalie Abbott), whose dreams of attending the local debutante ball are shattered when her urbane cousin Maeve (North Shore’s Charlotte MacInnes) shows up and brand the whole thing as a “heteronormative shitshow.”
From there, the film turns into a vivid clash of ideals, sequins, and attitudes as the cousins stumble toward friendship, self-confidence, and a much-needed transformation of Dunburn’s traditions. The trailer showcases a mix of heartwarming youthful beats and savvy, slightly naughty musical comedy.
The cast also includes Stevie Jean, Shane Jacobson, Tara Morris, and Wilson himself. Wilson is directing from a script by Hannah Riley, whose previous credits include working with Australian satirical comedy group The Chasers. Wilson is already working on her next film as a director, the music-based comedy “Girl Group.”
Distributed by Rialto, The Fat will be released in Australian cinemas on January 15th, with advance screenings running from January 9th to 11th.
