Netflix has released a trailer for Toxic Town, a limited series that illuminates one of the UK’s most infamous environmental scandals. Created by BAFTA-winning author Jack Thorne (swimmer, his dark material), the series follows a group of mothers who took over the local council after their child was born with a birth defect. Poisoning. Please read the trailer above and read more about it.

plot

Set in the 1980s, Toxic Town tells the story of a working-class woman caught up in a battle with powerful institutions. When they discover that they are suspected to be falsely wrong in the toxic waste in their town, they may have caused serious birth defects in their children, they are for justice A legal battle has begun.

Unfamiliar with the incident before he took on the project, Thorn was quickly hit with the real-life events unfolding like a fascinating drama. “It had a lot of drama in it,” he told Netflix’s site Tudum. “Is it the story of the trial itself, or whether these women gathered together to fight together?”

The series not only focuses on courtrooms, but also explores the emotional and psychological burdens these women carry through their struggles. Thorne described the story as much more complicated than a simple legal battle. “There’s a lot of internalized responsibilities that these women are clearly (to deal with),” he said. But despite their guilt and obstacles, they found strength in their collective battle.

“It was incredible to see and see how it affected other parts of their lives,” he continued. “It’s not just that these simple hero women come together, fight men and win this court victory. There’s nothing simple about that. You’re wondering where their power came from? You can see it.

The real story

The events depicted in the toxic town are based on real-life Kobe addiction, one of the UK’s biggest environmental scandals. For years, the Northamptonshire town of Kobe is home to the operation of Steelworks, and it is said that the dangerous waste was mistakenly wrong when the site was demolished in the 1980s.

Despite facing strong opposition, a group of mothers took their case to court, leading to a groundbreaking legal battle that challenged institutional negligence. Thorne was particularly struck by the legal complexity of the case. “The more you look at it, the more complicated it becomes,” he explained. “I’ve done legal drama before, but I’m very surprised to see the journey they had to continue to prove this, which was taken through the real truth and proven. I felt it was shocking.”

He also highlighted that the series captures the resilience of working-class individuals who are fighting their favorably and rarely working systems. “It’s really about working class,” Thorn said. “It tells the story of people who are not part of a system that they didn’t think would work for them.

Those interested in finding where the court case has ended (potential spoilers for the series) can read the April 2010 news report from the Guardian here.

Cast and creative

The cast is led by Jody Whitaker’s doctor who plays Susan McIntyre, one of the mothers at the center of the case. She was joined by sex education star Amy Lou Wood as Tracy Taylor and Bridgerton’s Claudia Jesse as Maggie Mahon. The cast also includes Robert Carlisle (Full Monty) as Sam Hagen, Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey) as Roy Thomas, and Rory Kinnear (diplomat) as Death Collins.

Thorne praised the cast and called it “a dream company.” He admitted to being surprised they had secured such a strong ensemble. “We couldn’t believe we could get these people and they were ready to be part of this story. And boy, did they all deliver?”

He highlighted Carlisle’s transformation for this role, and was particularly impressed by Whitaker’s performance. “I’ve never seen her do anything like this, it’s like I found that confusion and the truth, and the courage Susan has,” he said. “And Amy Lou (Thu) – quietness and its tragedy. Each of them brought me something new I’ve never seen before, and the cast you’re doing it consistently. When you’re with it, it’s so exciting to see and it’s so beautiful.”

release date

All four episodes of Toxic Town will be streamed on Netflix starting February 27th.
