Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas may be jumping into the deeper and bigger. It’s a submarine supernatural thriller. It reunites the cruise with Dagriman, director of Edge of Tomorrow and longtime creative partner Christopher McCurly (director of the last four missions: Impossible Films).
As first reported in Deadline, De Armas is currently “prepared” to join the project, with the two stars dive training together during preparation. Although no official confirmation has been made by their representatives, the film appears to be gaining serious momentum behind the scenes.
Astronauts, ditches, and horrible powers
The deeper astronaut center discovers a terrifying presence while diving into an unknown sea ditch. A fusion of science fiction and psychological horror, the project compares to films like Abyss and Sphere, and has spent years developing before gaining new momentum.
The original script was written by Max Landis (Chronicle, Bright) and purchased by MGM in 2016. Idris Elba and filmmaker Baltasar Kolmakul then rode on another iteration, but as with previous efforts, the version stalled.
Big budget, big stakes – but where do you land?
Back to the table, Deeper is reportedly attracting attention from both Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios. With budgets proposed in the USD 2 million area, it is clear that this is not a small venture.
The film is also expected to build on the momentum of Cruise’s current blockbuster hit. Top Gun: Maverick is a huge hit, and his latest mission: Impossible Installation tracks a powerful box office opening. Meanwhile, De Armas will help potentially position her as a lead in the rising genre, with John Wick spinoff Ballerina on the verge of being released widely.
Meanwhile, Cruz, Liman and McCurley also have plans for a film to be filmed in space. Yes, it’s outer space. It’s been a while since I heard something on that front, but NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX were reportedly in discussions to support the project.
Deeper and it looks like the cruise wants to make next. stay tuned!
