Tinā, The Rule of Jenny Pen and Ka Whawhai Tonu will lead the charge at next month’s New Zealand Screen Awards, with nine nominations each.

The Convert,We Were Dangerous, The Gone and Double Parked also feature strongly, earning six nods apiece, while Māori dramas End of the Valley and Dead Ahead, comedy series Madam and Happiness and children’s series Secrets at Red Rocks earned five.

Tinā, Ka Whawhai Tonu and We Were Dangerous will contest the Best Feature Film prize, while four TVNZ shows will vie for Best Drama Series: The Brokenwood Mysteries, Dead Ahead ,The Gone Season 2 and A Remarkable Place to Die.

In film, The Moon is Upside Down stars Elizabeth Hawthorn and Victoria Haralabidou are both nominated for the best actress awards with Tinā‘s Anapela Palata’ivao and We Were Dangerous‘ Erana James, while The Rule of Jenny Pen’s Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow are up against Head South‘s Ed Oxenbould and Uproar‘s Julian Dennison in the best actor race.

On the television side, Antonia Prebble (Double Parked season 2), Madeleine Sami (Double Parked season 2) and Miriama Smith (Dead Ahead) are nominated for best actress, while Stephen Lovatt (Shortland Street), Richard Flood (The Gone Season 2) and Xavier Horan (Dead Ahead) vie for best actor.

The New Zealand Screen Awards underwent a rebrand this year to encompass film alongside TV, with the awards now featuring 57 categories. More than 700 entries were put forward this year.

NZSA committee member and CEO of South Pacific Pictures Kelly Martin said the response to the awards surpassed expectations, stating the inclusion of film had brought a “wonderful new energy”.

“Each of our finalists stand as a testament to the talent and innovation that make our screen community so extraordinary,” she said.

New Zealand Film Commission CEO Annie Murray added it was wonderful to see film’s inclusion.

“Despite the challenges faced by the industry both locally and globally this year, there’s much for those in front and behind the camera to be proud of. These awards highlight the remarkable achievements and celebrate the resilience and creativity that define our industry,” she said.

The NZSA will also honour outstanding contributions to the industry via the Screen Legend Award, alongside the the publicly voted Personality of the Year category, both to be announced at a later date.

Winners will be revealed on November 21 at Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre at a ceremony hosted by comedian Pax Assadi.
