Warner Bros.
After nearly 40 years of speculation, Warner Bros. is officially moving forward with a Goony sequel.
The studio taps old Henry filmmaker Potsy Ponciroli to write the script, showing the most important step for long-term follow-up. And Steven Spielberg, who was pregnant with the original story, is attached to the producer for Goonies screenwriters Chris Columbus, Christie McCosco Krieger and Amblyn Entertainment. Lauren Schler Donner, who was involved in the original through the production company of her late husband, Richard Donner, is taking part as an executive producer.
It is certainly promising news and, importantly, official, but it is worth noting that it is still in its early days. The studio has not yet been appointed director. And of course, all the plot details are still kept under the wrap.
The news follows years and repeated discussions about sequels. Even some of the original cast members have been questioning the feasibility of the project in recent years. In September 2024, Corey Feldman took him to social media to dispel rumors about the sequel, saying, “I can officially say 100% no! (sic)” Meanwhile, Oscar winner Ke Hui Quang says he is open to improving its data role, but he was unsure about the potential of the second film, especially after the death of director Richard Donner in 2021.
The original Goonies, released in 1985, was directed by donors and became the cornerstone of pop culture in the 80s. The film follows a group of homes, mouths, data, chunks and the rest of the children in the gang, followed by a wild treasure hunt to save the house from foreclosure. Along the way, they encounter hidden tunnels, deadly booby traps, and the infamous Fratelli crime family, all leading to the discovery of one-eyed Willy’s long treasure. The much-loved film helped launch the careers of young stars such as Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Ke Hui Quan and Martha Plimpton.
stay tuned…
