Wagner Moura (Narcos, Civil War) leads Secret Agent, a lively new political thriller for Clever Mendon Saffilho (Aquarius, Baclau). The official teaser trailer has arrived. Look above and read the essentials.
In Carnival Week Recife, 1977, widow Marcelo (Moura), a technology researcher already on the crosshairs of a dictatorship, tries to reunite with his young son and find a way out of the country. Recife proves it’s not safe. With the mercenary varieties on his trail and old ghosts shoved in, Marcelo leaned against Elsa (Maria Fernanda Candido) and an underground network navigating through a city that vibrates with colour and violence.
The film personally bets on a rechargeable moment in Brazilian history. Clever’s Cinefiles peeps – including the cheeky Ennio Moricon needle drop: “Gerra a Pace, Polaro a Brace,” Salvatore Samperi’s 1968 film Grazie Zia (aka Come Play with Me). It also gives hints of the main character’s duality. “I’m not a violent person,” Marcelo tells Elsa that the trailer closes. “But this guy… I’ll kill him with a hammer.”
The reception was highlighted from Cannes. The film received a 13-minute standing ovation, winning the Art House Cinema Award and Fipresci Award, in addition to being the best actor of Moura and Best Director of Mendonça Filho. And it’s fair to say that this is worth noting, as he has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.
Secret Agent will open on November 26th at Select US Cinemas.
