Legendary entertainment
The Pacific Rim Universe is a good return. This time it’s a live-action series form. The long-term project is currently officially under development on Prime Video, with legendary television and Amazon MGM Studios teaming up to bring the world of Jaegers and Kaiju to stream.
The series serves as a prequel to the film, diving into the early stages of humanity’s battle against the enormous threat that emerged from the dimensional rifts of the Pacific Ocean. Although the story details are still wrapped, the project promises to introduce new characters and corners in the universe, expanding the myth of the franchise.
Variety reports that Oscar-nominated author Eric Hiseler (arrivals, shadows, bones) is on board as author and executive producer via his chronology production banner. The series also marks the first project of Heisser’s First-Look Deal with Legendary. Known for projects like Arrivals, Birdbox and Shadow and Bone, Highseller brings a strong background in sci-fi world-building to the new series.
Pacific Rim Legacy continues
Pacific Rim Universe first stomps the cinema in 2013 with an original Guillermo Del Toro film. This has earned more than USD 411 million worldwide from a budget of USD 1.9 million. The 2018 sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, brought in USD 291 million and introduced a new generation of characters as the son of Idris Elba’s iconic stacker Pentecost, including John Boyega.
There were a series of spin-offs of the Netflix anime. PacificRim: The Black ran two seasons between 2021 and 2022. The franchise has also expanded to comics, novels, video games and toys.
There’s no word yet on the budget for this live-action show, but given the size of the franchise and the reputation of Prime Video for its massive spending, it’s fair to expect a costly outing here. No release date has been announced.
The series participates in a growing roster of genre-heavy titles from legendary television, including Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Dune: Prophecy, and Raider of the Tomb: Lara Croft.
