The Nintendo Switch made it right with the original Pro Controller. Maybe it was an unpleasant pleasure, and it was too small, but after begging for an alternative, the pro controller brought the item.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller feels like Nintendo understands we are already happy. With familiar shapes and designs, Nintendo hasn’t done much to redefine the original formula, but it has been added to the overall package counted.
With charging times, additional chat buttons, a new two-tone colorway, headphone jack and customizable back buttons, the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller is the successor to the classic.
design
At first glance, the Switch 2 Pro controller looks very similar. In general, you need to pick this up and notice more important differences.
The difference between these in the matter is generally to include a C button to access GameChat. I also love the addition of mapable GL and GR buttons on the back of the controller. I’ll touch on using them a little later.
Either way, these extra buttons sit well under both your middle fingers and the controller feels comfortable overall.
The controller has a matte grey finish, as opposed to the clear gray finish of the original console, but although it’s not a major difference manufacturer, I prefer it. The two-tone colorway with the trigger and the light gray panels under each stick also looks fantastic.
The Switch 2 Pro controller comes with a built-in headphone jack underneath. This is definitely the most requested addition to this package. Simply connect a wired 3.5mm headset and you’re ready.
There aren’t many other things in the package except for the 1.5m USB-A to USB-C cable for charging.
Performance and Software
Most parent-centric controllers on other platforms allow for some customization. Whether it’s the edge of the dual-sense or the Xbox elite controller, I think it’s important that you get a little bit more out of the experience and that the Switch 2 Pro controller leans into that space.
During the game, simply press the Home button to access Quick Settings and map the GL and GR buttons to any command on the fly on the controller.
The face buttons are also large, responding thanks to a satisfying feel and very minimal travel time. The back ZR and ZL triggers are also very short and punchy, but it would have been good to have some adaptive triggers to add soaking.
The left and right analog sticks are also amazing. Even when you play, they are not only responsive, they are incredibly smooth and satisfying. I don’t usually use JoyCons when the console is docked, but in comparison it’s hard to pick up anything.
However, I am a bit worried that the Switch 2 Pro controller is not using the hole effect stick. Given that the original switch encountered this issue, I hope they have at least taken certain steps to address it here.
The battery life of the Switch 2 Pro controller is generally the same as the original, clocking in about 40 hours after a full charge. Thankfully, you’ll be billed much faster than the original in about 2 hours.
These are all big and general improvements to the original controller, but it is worth noting here that the original Switch Pro Controller works with Switch 2. It’s worth considering whether you feel like you’re not using your console or controller consistently. I still feel there is plenty of value there.
Verdicts and Values
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is a great iteration that offers a premium feel along with customizable features and better integration of wired headsets, such as GameChat, and software features on new hardware.
The GL and GR buttons are easy enough to customize the middle of the game, and the two-tone finish looks extremely stylish without feeling overwhelming.
If you’re a casual user, that $119 price tag may feel that it’s not essential, but if the Nintendo Switch 2 is a new addition to your collection, it’s an option you should strongly consider.
