‘The Mummy’ teaser trailer: ‘The Evil Dead’ director brings a dark new take on classic horror

The official teaser trailer for Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has been released, marking the beginning of a dark new chapter for the iconic horror film directed by Evil Dead filmmaker Lee Cronin. It’s only a one-minute teaser, but it’s unsettling when you first taste it, and it’s also very appealing. Watch the teaser above, then read on for more details.

Missing child, unable to return

The story revolves around a journalist whose young daughter disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the shattered family is stunned when she suddenly returns. What should be a miraculous reunion quickly turns into something more sinister. Unsettling physical changes, violent flashes, and eerie images suggest that what has returned may not be fully human.

The film stars Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Mae Karamawy, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcon. Cronin, who directed Hole in the Ground in 2019, will write and direct alongside producer John Keville, alongside producers James Wan and Jason Blum. Executive producers include Michael Clear, Judson Scott, McDara Kelleher, and Cronin himself.

Lee Cronin leans into mystery and dark mythology

Speaking about the project with IGN, Cronin explained that the film is more of a layered puzzle than a simple monster story. “The movie itself is really a mystery, like a puzzle box. That was part of the reason I was drawn to it,” he explained. “The film I wanted to make reflected ideas about deeply buried secrets and things we might not know. This film comes from a completely different place, and it’s not even a reinvention of mummy lore. It’s looking into dark places and doing something different with what we think we already know.”

Cronin also teased unusual tonal blends. “It’s an insane mashup, but[the film is]almost part Poltergeist and part Seven, but through my lens and through my way of entertaining people,” he says.

“I’m definitely an Amblin kid and a Spielberg kid. So when I talk about Poltergeist, what I mean is the family situation and the warmth of family. And when I talk about Seven, I mean the dark investigative perspective and the secrets that exist behind it…I’m trying to bring that together in Center Court.”

This will be the first major studio swing at The Mummy since 2017’s Tom Cruise-led attempt failed to kickstart Universal’s planned Dark Universe. Universal is also reportedly developing a fourth Mummy movie in the franchise, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

release date

Lee Cronin’s Hamunaptra will be released in Australian cinemas on April 15th and in US cinemas on April 17th.
