‘The Last Frontier’ Interview: Simone Kessel talks about working on Apple’s epic action thriller series

We recorded a video chat with New Zealand star Simone Kessel (Yellowjackets, Obi-Wan Kenobi) about Apple TV+’s The Last Frontier, in which she plays Sara Remnick. You can see it above. The epic action-thriller series debuts with two episodes on October 10th and will be available weekly until December 5th.

The Apple Studios series follows Federal Marshal Frank Remnick (played by Jason Clarke – see our interview with the Australian actor here) as part of a larger, orchestrated plot to unleash violent inmates after a prison transport plane crashes in the Alaskan wilderness. The ensemble includes Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Dallas Goldtooth, Tate Blum, and Alfre Woodard.

Kessel was eager to finally get the film in front of an audience, and it’s been a long journey since he was drawn to the scope of the script. “I thought, ‘This is ambitious!'” But know that that’s what Apple is doing. I was a fan of Jon Bokenkamp (co-creator, showrunner). I know Jason (Clarke) very well. I was like, “This is big!” And it was incredibly exciting. Last year was 7 months of my life. So, yes, we can finally see it, and we can finally promote it and show it to the world…let’s see what happens!”

For the character Sarah, Kessel aimed for quiet stillness rather than volume. “I played her with a real inner strength… She’s down-to-earth, driven, tenacious… She doesn’t fight or compete for attention.”

As for why the television format suits her, “You can really immerse yourself in your character. You can develop more. You can bring more to the character.”

Recently, she has won the right to choose which roles to play. And she is very grateful. “When we’re talking about this level of art, to be able to create a character on screen and have it shown all over the world…I mean, that’s pretty amazing. I’ve always recognized that and I’m very grateful.”
