Here’s the official trailer for The Breadwinner, comedian Nate Bargatze’s first feature film. Watch the trailer above, then read on for more details.

“Breadwinner” becomes househusband

Bargazze stars as Nate Wilcox, whose wife Katie (Mandy Moore) signs a once-in-a-lifetime deal with Shark Tank that sends her on an extended business trip. As a result, Nate, who has been a lifelong caregiver, is forced to “support his family as a first-time stay-at-home dad,” as the synopsis states. With three young daughters and little experience managing day-to-day living, Nate “quickly realized that running the family finances was the hardest job he’d ever had.”

The film is directed by Eric Appel (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story) and co-written by Bargatze and Dan Lagana (American Vandal, The Babysitter: Killer Queen). The cast also includes Colin Jost, Zach Cherry, Martin Hurley, Kate Berlant, Kumail Nanjiani, and Will Forte.

Nate Bargatze and Family-Friendly Attractions

In an interview with People magazine, Bargazze described The Breadwinner as “hilarious, heartwarming and surprising” and called it “a throwback to the classic family comedy movies we all love.” He also points out what he sees as a gap in the market, saying, “I think there’s a lack of entertainment made for the whole family. There are very few movies that can make people of all ages laugh. So I decided to make my own.”

TriStar Pictures president Nicole Brown also explained why she wanted to move forward with the project quickly in a cover story with Nate Bargatze of The Hollywood Reporter: “The idea that his first film was so personal and authentic to him and his comedy felt like the perfect foray, and he really found a space for it.” She added that Bargazze’s own pitch was straightforward. “He was like, ‘I want to see a movie with the whole family. Now I can go see animation, but there’s nothing with real people in it,'” he added.

release date

The Breadwinner will be released in Australian cinemas on March 12, 2026 and in US cinemas on March 13.
