‘The Batman 2’: Release date postponed to 2027, director James Gunn says script is still in progress

Warner Bros. has announced that the release of the 2022 Batman sequel, The Batman: Part II, will be delayed by one year. The US release date for the Matt Reeves-directed DC film has been significantly changed from the original October 2, 2026 (October 1, 2026 in Australia) to October 1, 2027.

Filming on the sequel is not expected to begin until late next summer (US season), but extensive visual effects work is expected on the film, giving the studio more time to ensure a polished final product. It seems like it is. The sequel, starring Robert Pattinson, is also scheduled to be shown in IMAX, the same format that Warner Bros. uses to release blockbuster films.

DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn addressed the backlash. “Of course. Yes, that’s true,” Gunn admitted in response to a fan question in the thread. “The only reason for the delay is that there is no complete script (which those of you who follow me here probably already know). Matt is committed to making the best movie possible. We’re working on it, but no one can accurately estimate how long it takes to write a script. Once a script is completed, a major film takes about two years to go through pre-production, shooting, and post-production. .”

Interestingly, Warner Bros. had already reserved the first weekend of October 2027 for a DC title, so this move seemed more like a strategic realignment than a complete setback.

Batman was a triumph for the studio when it launched in 2022, earning widespread praise from critics and audiences alike. It was also a box office hit, earning $772 million worldwide, including $369.3 million in the United States. The film also spawned the critically acclaimed HBO spin-off series The Penguin, with Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald. Cob. The crime drama became one of the streaming platform’s biggest hits.

Looking at the U.S. release slot, the newly vacant October 2026 slot will be filled by an as-yet-untitled drama directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise. The mysterious project, which will also be released in IMAX, features a cast that includes Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed and Michael Stuhlbarg. Although details are still unclear, the pairing of Iñárritu and Cruz is understandably generating interest.

Warner Bros. also changed the U.S. release dates of other major titles. Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi project “Mickey 17,” starring Robert Pattinson, has been moved to March 7, 2025, and Ryan Coogler’s horror film “Sinners,” starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, has been moved to 2025. The slot will be Easter weekend, April 18th.

The wait for Batman 2 is only going to get longer, but I hope this extra time is indeed a calculated effort to ensure the sequel lives up to expectations.
