With less than two weeks until SXSW Sydney 2024 takes place in Darling Harbour, the gaming festival has announced the shortlist for its highly anticipated 2024 Games & Screen Awards. One of the festival’s signature events, the awards recognize outstanding indie games from the festival’s showcase, celebrating the best in mechanical design, gameplay, narrative, and creative direction.
Here’s a breakdown of all shortlisted categories:
best international game
The awards recognize outstanding games developed outside of Australia and New Zealand and celebrate the innovative efforts of global developers.

Spotlighting emerging developers and new studios, the Discovery Awards recognize the freshest titles introduced at the SXSW Sydney Games Showcase.

SXSW Sydney Game of the Year is all about celebrating the pinnacle of artistry and design. This award shines a light on titles that demonstrate incredible technical skill and limitless creativity, delivering a truly outstanding gaming experience.

The winner will be announced at Fortress Sydney on Saturday 19th October at 7pm. In addition to the main category, three further awards will be given out on the night.
• People’s Choice Award – Public voting begins on October 14, 2024 and ends on October 19, 2024. Fans can vote for their favorite games from the showcase.
• Tabletop Award – This award recognizes primarily non-digital games, such as card games, board games, and role-playing games, that are thoughtfully designed and provide an engaging solo or social experience.
• Best Student Game – This award spotlights outstanding student games in the Student Showcase, celebrating the bold creativity, radical innovation, and unstoppable passion of up-and-coming developers.
