At New York Comic-Con, director James Gunn provided an update on the progress of Superman (2025), gave his thoughts on how great Man of Steel newcomer actor David Corensweat is, and announced that DC Fans have been given a preview of when they can expect to see the first trailer. It’s been a long road since the end of the DCEU and Superman’s DCU reboot, but with a July 2025 release date just around the corner and the first DCU release, Creature Commandos, less than two months away, pre-marketing has begun. It’s already started.
Gunn appeared alongside the Creature Commandos cast at a panel discussion at NYCC, which also included Screen Rant’s Molly Freeman, and took the opportunity to praise Superman star David Corenwett.
“The movie is progressing very well. We’re in the middle of editing. David Corenswet is going to surprise people. He’s the movie star that everyone just dreams he could be. “I don’t think so.” Everybody understands the depth of this guy’s talent – dramatically, comedically – he’s the best physical action guy I’ve ever worked with. The stars, perhaps with the exception of… (protests from the group on stage) Frank (Grillo)… and Rachel Brosnahan, people are going to die for her as Lois…
Director Gunn then talked about the progress of “Superman,” which finished filming at the end of July, and teased when the first trailer, which fans have been waiting for, will be released.
It was a great process. The editing is coming close to being pretty good. The movie is good. I feel very good. (When asked if there is any footage with him or if there is a trailer) Don’t get too excited…no trailer, no trailer for Superman. There’s something in my phone. I had it taken off in case people attacked me… It won’t be long until the trailer comes out, but it won’t be too soon either. ”
What James Gunn’s Superman update means for the DCU
Will the trailer be able to land by the end of 2024?
First and foremost, the suggestion that it “won’t be long” until the first Superman trailer drops is big news, even with the caveat that it’s not “too soon.” This really feels like Gunn is tempering expectations that a release is imminent, but his comments about how close the edit is to finished product are still telling. The director previously cryptically answered a question on the thread from a fan asking whether we should expect a trailer before the end of the year, using a thinking emoji, which inevitably sparked speculation.

If we average out typical trailer release dates, we’ll see that studios have 3-6 months to pick up a release, which could take until the end of 2025. The 2024 CCXP in Brazil is December 4th. A logical point in the calendar. It also coincides with the release of Creature Commandos (December 5th), and could lead to extensive marketing for the DCU ahead of the release of Superman.
Gunn’s comments about David Corenswet’s performance as Superman will likely factor into that hype campaign, especially considering the director’s MCU tenure and the action performances he’s already directed. The call to action for Corenswet and co-star Frank Grillo prior to “Superman” is something to behold.
