Universal Pictures and Illumination have released the official trailer for Super Mario Galaxy Movie, as Mario, Luigi, and Peach blast off into deep space for their next big-screen adventure – and yes, Rosalina finally joins the chat. Watch the teaser above and read important details below.
Exploration of space – and a nod beyond the world
The 2026 sequel sees the Mushroom Kingdom crew blast into the stars, teasing a glittering galaxy, space troubles, and a new threat that Bowser laughs a little too hard at. The trailer delivers plenty of galaxy-hopping spectacle, as well as some surprises that fans probably weren’t expecting to see this soon.
Rosalina, voiced by Brie Larson, sees her make the long-awaited jump from Wii icon to animated film canon. Although her voice isn’t featured in the main teaser, Larson plays the role in this promo.
Another newcomer is Benny Safdie (actor/director who recently directed Smash Machines) who plays Bowser Jr., wearing a Super Mario Sunshine-style bandanna and paintbrush, a detail that fans were immediately drawn to.
Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), and Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) will all return for the sequel.
We also get a glimpse of what appears to be the Sand Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey, suggesting that the film may jump across multiple eras and corners of Mario’s history rather than sticking strictly to the galaxy’s planets.
Although Yoshi does not appear, it is almost certain that this character will appear in the sequel. A post-credits scene in the Super Mario Bros. movie shows Yoshi’s egg hatching, and leaked promotional materials hint at his official debut. Perhaps he will appear in a future trailer.
Team returns after big hit
Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will return as directors, and screenwriter Matthew Fogel and composer Brian Tyler will also co-star. The film is produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, and co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo.
The Super Mario Bros. movie grossed over US$1.36 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful animated films ever made. With so many popular Mario titles, Galaxy, and Rosalina’s long-awaited debut, feels like a natural next step for the franchise.
release date
Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released in Australian cinemas on April 2, 2026, and in US cinemas on April 3, 2026.
