Stunts finally get an Oscar: Academy announces stunt design awards

“The Fall Guy” – Love Letter to David Leitch’s Stunt Community | Universal Photography

It took over a century, but Oscar is finally making space for the waterfalls, battles and those behind fireballs. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled a brand new competitive Oscar for the achievements of stunt design, which is set to debut at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028 for a film released in 2027.

This is the first new category since the cast was introduced in 2024. For the stunt community, it is a groundbreaking moment.

A rewarded push

“Stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking since the beginning of the film,” said academy CEOs Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang. “We are proud to celebrate these technical and creative artists’ innovative work and we celebrate their commitment and dedication to reach this important opportunity.”

The decision follows years of defense, and recently led by director and former stunt performer David Rach (Fall Man, Bullet Train, Deadpool 2) who worked with stunt coordinator Chris O’Hara to formally present the case to the academy.

“This has been a long journey for many of us,” Rach said. “Chris O’Hara and I have spent years trying to bring this moment back to life. We stand on the shoulders of stunt experts who have fought tirelessly after decades of recognition. We are extremely grateful. Thank you, Academy.”

Not just action – design

The new awards will focus on stunt design. This is a move that has been praised by industry figures to highlight creative behind-the-scenes collaboration.

“It’s humble and we’re extremely honored to be honored where some of the best in the industry go,” John Wick’s director and former stuntman Chad Stahelsky told Variety. “Our division is one of the most collaborative and complex of all divisions, so I think they did something really interesting by awarding the stunt design award, in contrast to individual performers.”

Jeff Wolf, president of the Association of Stuntmen, called “a historic moment for our community,” and said, “this perception examines the passion, innovation, creativity and hard work that lies in every fall, battle, fireball. It’s not a victory for our industry.

What’s next?

Over 100 stunt experts are part of the Academy’s production and technology division. The exact rules for eligibility and voting were released in 2027 as part of the 100th Oscar Guidelines, followed by presentation details.

“Stunts are essential to all genres of film and are deeply rooted in the history of the industry,” says Leitch. “From groundbreaking works by early pioneers such as Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin to the inspiring artistry of today’s stunt designers, coordinators, performers and choreographers.”

It took a long time to recognize it. It’s coming in 2028 and will eventually become official.
