Former Werner Film Productions managing director Stuart Menzies has been appointed to the board of Big Screen.
Menzies has been involved in content creation, production, commissioning, channel management, programming and fundraising over a 40-year career.
He was MD of Werner Film from 2018 to 2025, and the company was acquired by BBC Studios in 2024. During his tenure, he was an executive producer on “The Newsreader,” “Saving Summer,” “Crazy Fun Park,” “The Knee High Spy,” “Goolagon,” and co-produced 60Forty Films’ upcoming “The Dispatcher” for Apple TV.
In 2018, Menzies was the Australian producer of Synchronicity Films’ The Cry for the BBC and ABC. He also held various senior management positions at the ABC, including first controller of ABC2 (2010-2014), driving the commissioning of the network’s young polarized digital channels.
Menzies joins Big Screen’s current directors Nick Forward, Mitu Bhowmik, Andrea Denholm, Anne Jackson, Greg McLean, Tiriki Onus, Jenny Tyne, Lizzie Kane and managing director George Lekakis.
“Stuart’s extensive experience across production, commissioning, channel management, programming and financing and clear understanding of audiences will be invaluable to Big Screen’s strategic leadership,” said George Lekakis, President of Big Screen.
Mr Menzies added: “Big Screen has always been the premier state agency in the country and I’m thrilled to have been asked to join the board. I’ve worked in a variety of roles for 40 years, but at heart I’ve always been a producer and a passionate supporter of independent production and Victoria. I’m looking forward to adding my voice at a time of great change in the industry.”
