Netflix has released the official teaser trailer for Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, giving fans their first proper look at the animated return to Hawkins. Watch the teaser above, then read what’s revealed about how this story fits into the Stranger Things timeline, including new mysteries, returning characters, and the somewhat far-fetched idea that the gang survived an entire extra chapter between seasons 2 and 3 that we’ve somehow never heard details about.
That “lost story” angle is part of the plot here. Season 2 ends with the gates closing and Snowball dancing. Then Season 3 begins, with everyone getting older and the energy of summer and Starcourt on the horizon. Tales from ’85 steps squarely into that gap with a winter-set adventure, teasing a complete mystery that still has a timeline to spare by the time the credits roll. A winter mystery set between seasons 2 and 3
Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is set in the Stranger Things universe between seasons 2 and 3 and takes place in the winter of 1985. The gates to the Upside Down have closed and the kids are likely back to their normal routine of Dungeons & Dragons and snowball fights.
“Something about Upside Down must have survived last year,” Dustin says in the teaser, hinting that he didn’t get the memo that whatever was going on inside Hawkins was closed. The official synopsis leans into that anxiety, saying, “Below the ice, something terrifying has awakened,” setting up a new paranormal mystery that puts Hawkins in danger once again.
New creatures, familiar DNA
Season 2 ends with Eleven closing the gates of Hawkins Laboratory, so the animated series had built-in questions to answer. “That was a huge challenge in developing the show,” showrunner Eric Robles (Glitch Tech) told Netflix site Tudum.
As he explains, he went back through the series, dug into its 80s inspiration, and tried to put together the right approach. “Let me do a little research on this. Let me dissect the show thoroughly and dig into my old memory vault of ’80s movies I used to watch and see what I can piece together here,” Robles recalled. Once he started the process, the idea for the show “came to me.”
The teaser previews the strange new creatures roaming around Hawkins, and Robles explains the logic behind it in very Stranger Things terms, saying, “All of that is still connected to the Upside Down, so I All living things in our world have the DNA of upside-down organisms. It’s like Hawkins Lab science meets upside-down matter. When you put them together, they become the kinds of organisms that exist in our world.”
He also pointed out simple and effective winter horror hooks. “There’s something lurking beneath that snow, and you never know where it’s going to come out and get you.”

Characters and voice actors
Most of the main characters are here, including Eleven (voiced by Brooklyn Davey Norstead), Mike (Luca Diaz), Will (Benjamin Presara), Dustin (Braxton Quinney), Lucas (Elisha “EJ” Williams), and Max (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport). The teaser also gives us a glimpse of Steve Harrington, voiced by Jeremy Jordan, and Hopper, voiced by Brett Gipson. Odessa Azion, Jeanine Garofalo, and Lou Diamond Phillips also voice roles that have yet to be revealed.
Robles explained that the tone captures the thrill of childhood while making the danger feel real. “There’s the thrill of being young and a kid and going on an adventure. But there’s an essence of real danger, real stakes,” he said.
And for fans who want to spend more time with this group before the series comes to a close, he made it clear: “This is one of the rarest opportunities we’ll ever get to be with the main characters. We get to go back in time and really just spend time with these kids.”
