The end is near for Hawkins. Netflix has released the official trailer for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2. This makes it clear that everything the group thought they understood about the Upside Down is about to be torn apart. Watch the trailer above and read on to find out what’s in store for the final chapter.
Everything the kids thought they knew was wrong
The trailer begins on a solemn note. After a huge battle that revealed his powers, Will (Noah Schnapp) says, “We failed,” adding, “We never had a chance.” Joyce (Winona Ryder) refuses to accept that reality and tells her, “This isn’t over. It’s never far away.”
Unsurprisingly, Volume 2 is relentless, with plenty of action as the characters face the end of this long battle. “You die, I die,” Dustin and Steve (Joe Keery) say to each other. This is a clear sign that they are friends again after their recent clash. It looks like Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) will be teaming up with Kali Prasad/Eight (Linnea Bertelsen), whom she saved along with Hopper (David Harbour) in Part 1’s Closer. Max (Sadie Sink) and Holly (Nell Fisher) also travel back and forth through Vecna’s “mindscape,” and at one point in the trailer we see Holly confronting the villain himself.
As for Vecna, in the trailer’s final moments, he declares that it’s time for a “new world,” as the line between Hawkins and the Upside Down blurs on a scale that dwarfs what came before.
Will Byers becomes the center of the story.
Volume 2 continues to lean into the idea that Will is the key to ending Vecna for good. Co-creator Ross Duffer previously explained that the season would intentionally return to where it all began. “We always knew that Will was connected to Vecna and the Upside Down,” he told Netflix site Tudum. “In Season 2, we started digging into that, and one of our first ideas for the new season was, ‘What if Will could use this connection and use it against the villain?'”
Ross also framed this as a story choice that would bring the series full circle. “It also felt very natural to center the story back on Will. He was the child that was taken away in season one, so it felt right for the story to come full circle. If anyone was going to be the key to ending Vecna, it had to be Will.”
This change is also reflected in the cast. Will’s powers will be “game-changing” for the Hawkins teenager, according to Matarazzo. “I think that puts us on a more level playing field. I’m sure that’s objectively scary for Vecna.” As Wolfhard says, “We have two elevens.”
Will’s growth also has emotional weight beyond simply acquiring new superpowers. Co-creator Matt Duffer explained that this moment is tied to Will finally getting over something he’s been dealing with for years. “Will has been dealing with a lot over the last four seasons, and there are so many emotions and inner conflicts that remain unresolved,” he said. “So we wanted him to grow as a person and become a fully formed version of himself. … And if he could do that, he would be able to tap into these incredible powers.”
The next three episodes will arrive on Christmas
The second volume of Stranger Things Season 5 will premiere on Christmas Day, delivering three new episodes as the story moves towards its conclusion. The final episode, Episode 8, is titled “The Rightside Up” and will be released on New Year’s Day.
