Netflix has released the first trailer for Steve, the latest collaboration between Oscar winner Cillian Murphy and director Tim Mielants. Written by Max Porter and based on the 2023 Sunday Times bestselling shy, the drama will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, heading to cinemas and later Netflix.

A rethinkable story told from a new perspective
Set in the mid-1990s, Steve rethinks Porter’s acclaimed novel by shifting his focus to the prime minister’s perspective. The story unfolds on a pivotal day at the Last Chance Reform School. There, Murphy’s character fights against his mental health struggles, trying not to close from closure. In parallel, troubled teen embarrassment (Jay Ricklugo) is working to reconcile his traumatic past and pull to self-destruction.

Speaking at the deadline, Murphy described Steve as “one of the most exposed and scary characters I’ve ever played.” The actor, whose parents, grandfathers and many relatives were teachers, said the film world is familiar, but it is far more extreme. “You’re dealing with these very unstable, unpredictable and damaged children,” Murphy said.
The actor also spoke about the deeply immersive process of bringing the story to life. “I couldn’t do that because acting really wasn’t related without knowing these people that I didn’t trust very much.
Cast and release details
The cast also includes Tracey Ullman (Mrs. America), Simbi Ajikawo (Top Boy), and Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves). Produced by Murphy, Alan Moloney and Tina Paulik, the film features the music of Ben Salisbury and Jeff Barrow.
Steve will open on September 19th at cinemas in Select US, UK and Ireland, and will premiere globally on Netflix on October 3rd.
