There is often no rhyme or reason when it comes to why some films survive for decades while others suffer the humiliation of being relegated to the bottom of film history. Some movies that completely flop at the box office have become cult favorites. While some movies are classics (some of which are featured below), others that are critically acclaimed age like milk left in the sun (Oscars) Award-winning American Beauty and Crash, we’re looking at you). However, the only thing that unites these films is a certain “purity” that ensures that they have stood the test of time.

heathers

The dark comedy/coming-of-age classic Heathers still has an incredibly long shelf life despite underperforming at the box office (budgeted at $1.1 million versus $3 million in U.S. theaters). It’s one of those extraordinary movies. Starring a post-Beetlejuice Winona Ryder, Christian Slater in full “Young Jack Nicholson” mode, and Beverly Hills, 90210’s Shannen Doherty, the story of a gang of mean high school girls coming together is not much It has been spun off into both bad and bad ones. – The musical was a hit on TV in 2018, began production in 2014, and is currently being revived in London’s West End to great acclaim.

Heathers is now streaming on SBS On Demand.

showgirl

Another flop was 1995’s outrageous camp erotic thriller “Showgirls,” from director Paul “RoboCop” Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (“Basic Instinct”). Filled with gratuitous sex and nudity, the film grossed just $37.8 million on a $45 million budget, but has since grossed well over $100 million in rental sales, making it the best-selling film of all time. Ranked in the top 20. Studio MGM.Showgirls is now considered a cult classic, So Bad It’s Good, and led to a 2019 documentary (You Don’t Nomi) and a sold-out Academy screening in Los Angeles in 2024. , which earned three standing ovations for the film’s stars. Elizabeth “Noomi” Berkeley.

Showgirls is now streaming on SBS On Demand.

ring

Modern audiences may wonder, “What is a VHS cassette?”, but this absolutely horrifying Japanese horror film about a cursed videotape is still popular 26 years after its original release. It’s scary enough to wet your pants. It is based on a 1991 novel and preceded by a 1995 Japanese production. The made-for-television movie The Ring, in which static electricity on a television screen is a nightmare, was so popular that it spawned several television series, a comic book, and even 13 movies, including It also includes a successful 2002 American remake starring Naomi Watts. A pitiful company that deals with demon-like girls crawling out of TVs.

Ring is currently available on SBS On Demand.

Barneys on the weekends

Comedy movies with silly settings were clearly popular with actor Andrew McCarthy in the ’80s. Deciding that a movie about a man who falls in love with a department store mannequin that magically comes to life (1987’s The Mannequin) wasn’t ridiculous enough, McCarthy decides to make his dead boss look exactly like a financial colleague. He applied for the 1989 film “Weekend at Bernie’s,” which depicts a couple. This quirky film was successful enough to spawn a 1993 sequel, completely jumping the shark by reanimating Barney’s (admittedly severely decomposed) corpse with voodoo. As you do.

Weekend at Bernie’s is streaming on SBS On Demand.

shaolin soccer

If you think a movie about a bunch of Shaolin monks using their superhuman kung fu abilities to play the craziest soccer match on screen is totally awesome, you’d be 100 percent right. Written, directed, and starring Stephen Chow, this outrageous 2001 action comedy was inspired by British director Edgar Wright’s 2010 cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. He says he gave it. The film was later adapted into a comic book, leading to a spin in Japan. -Off Movie (Shaolin Girls) and Chou announced that they have completed writing for a spin-off movie titled Shaolin Women’s Soccer.

Shaolin Soccer is now available on SBS On Demand.

tank girl

Did you think Mad Max movies were the only post-apocalyptic movies set in the desolate Australian outback? Think again. 1995’s Tank Girl is based on a comic by Brits Jamie Hewlett (who created all the visuals for the band Gorillaz) and Alan Martin, in which the titular character is a best buddy. Teamed up with Jet Girl (Australian Naomi Watts, first major US debut). The story revolves around fighting an evil corporation with the help of a mutant kangaroo (played by rapper and actor Ice-T). The movie was a huge flop, but thanks to its impressive visuals, strong feminist themes, and cool soundtrack overseen by Courtney Love and Ace, the makeup effects from Stan Winston Studios (The Thing, Terminator, Alien, Predator) Tank Girl with has become a beloved cult classic.

Tank Girl is currently available on SBS On Demand.

la femme nikita

In the late ’80s and early ’90s, remakes of French films were all the rage in Hollywood, with 17 films produced between 1987 and 1993. The 1993 American film The Point of No Return began life as the French action thriller La Femme Nikita by writer-director Luc Besson. The film is about a woman who is convicted of murder and trained to become a professional assassin (obviously for Besson at the time, her next feature film was 1994’s Hitman). Hitman “Leon: The Professional”). The film had enough of an impact to inspire other remakes (1), and there is one Bollywood version in Hong Kong, as well as two television series.

La Femme Nikita is now available on SBS On Demand.

Take a trip down memory lane with cult favorites on SBS On Demand.
