The movie “Stargate” (1991) and the series “Stargate SG-1” (1997)
Amazon MGM Studios has officially opened its doors again. A brand new live-action Stargate series has arrived on Prime Video, marking the sci-fi series’ first continuous television run since the Stargate Universe ended in 2011.
The announcement was made in a seven-minute video conversation featuring creator and executive producer Martin Gero, consulting producers Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi (all three longtime contributors to the series), Gateworld’s Darren Sumner, and Dial the Gate’s David Reid. Yes, I’ve included the full video below.
A new chapter of Stargate begins
Amazon has confirmed that it has greenlit the new series, which will be streamed globally on Prime Video and will continue the established Stargate canon rather than resetting it. Gero, the series’ longtime writer and producer, created the series and serves as showrunner. He will be joined by franchise architects Wright and Mallozzi, who will both return as consulting producers.
“This has been a very difficult secret to keep for the past 18 months, but today we can announce that an all-new Stargate series is coming to Prime Video,” Gero said. He stressed that fans shouldn’t expect a retelling, saying, “This is not a reboot. It’s a whole new chapter. It’s its own chapter in the Stargate universe.”
Gero added that the team aims to strike a balance between long-time die-hard fans and newcomers: “It’s really important to us that not only do our fans feel like, ‘This is my Stargate, this is the Stargate that I’ve been waiting for 14 years,’ but that new viewers can come in and start with episode one of a new Stargate show without having to watch 350 episodes of a great show. And if they like it, they can come back again.” And keep an eye on everything else. ”
Franchise legends reunite behind the scenes
In a notable development, original Stargate movie creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin have joined the new series as executive producers. This is the first time in the franchise’s 31-year history that the film and television creative teams have collaborated. They will sit alongside Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harrold and Tori Tunnell.
Wright also reflected on what today’s technology brings to the revival, saying, “We’re going to be able to do things that we couldn’t do in 1997, and even beyond. We’re going to be able to do pretty much anything you can think of with visual effects and your imagination. I feel very strongly that[fans]are going to watch this show and say, ‘This is Stargate.'”
Mallozzi echoed that enthusiasm, speaking about the fandom’s enduring presence: “When I first joined the franchise in the fourth season of SG-1, one of the first things I did was get on social media and started interacting with the fans. And Little did I know that I would be interacting with the fans for 25 years. And in those 25 years, I can tell you that their enthusiasm for Stargate has never waned. …Now I finally have a chance to tell them that Stargate is coming. ”
What’s next after Stargate?
The new series will continue within the established continuity and may see the return of familiar characters. That being said, there are no official casting details or creative details yet at this time. The production date, location, title, etc. have not yet been revealed.
Gero said he wanted to keep fans in the loop as the show progresses, hinting at behind-the-scenes teases, saying, “I think what’s great about the construction of Stargate is that it’s taking place today. It takes place on Earth, the Earth you know. But because of this gateway to the planet, we’re able to tell these amazing stories with epic scope, an incredible sense of humor, and real-world immersion again.”
Amazon currently owns the franchise, and Prime Video is available in over 240 territories, making this Stargate’s first truly global daytime release.
