Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu Official Trailer Features Hat, Unmasked Mando, and Scorsese Cameo

Lucasfilm has released the official trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, the upcoming adventures that will bring the duo to the big screen. Watch the trailer above and read on to find out what you can expect from the release of Star Wars, which opens in theaters for the first time in seven years.

Mando and Grogu head to the cracked galaxy.

Set after the fall of the Empire, the film depicts the Empire’s warlords scattered across the galaxy while the newly established New Republic strives to secure the fragile peace won by the Rebellion. To keep the tyrannical remnants in check, the New Republic enlists the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his increasingly talented apprentice Grogu.

Din and Grogu’s latest clash appears to take them directly into Hutt territory, with the trailer teasing a mission tied to the slug-like crime dynasty’s ongoing influence in the post-Imperial vacuum. Jeremy Allen White voices Lotta the Hutt, who gives the first impression of being muscular and wielding a giant axe, with the creepy Hutt twins also looming in the background. Whatever deal Ding is trying to close, it’s clear from the footage that things are going rampant quickly.

Other parts of the trailer lean into fan service in a way that feels purposeful. Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios returns, Steve Blum returns as vocalist, and The Clone Wars bounty hunter Embo reappears with a bowcaster in hand. There’s also a blink-and-you-can-hear cameo as an Ardenian trader, voiced by filmmaker Martin Scorsese. And yes, we finally got to see Sigourney Weaver properly as New Republic officer Colonel Ward.

One of the standout moments in the trailer is when Din Djarin takes off his mask. Mando has taken off his helmet four times in the series, so this isn’t the first time, but showing this moment in the trailer suggests that the movie will give Pascal a little more facial work, suggesting the character could be pushed into more emotionally exposed territory.

creative team

Behind the camera is creator Jon Favreau (Iron Man, 2019’s The Lion King), who launched The Mandalorian on Disney+. He co-wrote the screenplay with Star Wars galaxy expert Dave Filoni, whose screenwriting credits include Rebels, The Clone Wars, Tales of the Jedi, The Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.

On the producing side, Favreau will be joined by Kathleen Kennedy, Filoni and Ian Bryce. Ludwig Göransson returns to composing the score after shaping the series’ sound, and David Klein serves as cinematographer, having previously shot five episodes of The Mandalorian.

release date

The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released in Australian and New Zealand cinemas on May 21st, and in US cinemas on May 22nd.
