Good things come to those who wait. Deadline reported that the future story of Daisy Ridley’s Rey, which follows Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, will likely take some time due to the departure of the latest screenwriter, Steven Knight. Confirmed. According to sources, the search for a new scriptwriter is underway.
Film director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Disney+ series Ms. Marvel) will continue to direct.
When Deadline spoke with Ridley at SXSW, she was still waiting on the script. The actress said she knows “the little details” about the new story. The next series will likely focus on Rey, the Emperor’s granddaughter, having no children and her founding a Jedi Academy.
As for project delays, nothing is expected to affect the two delayed Star Wars release dates. There are currently untitled photos set to December 18, 2026 and December 17, 2027.
Peaky Blinders creator Knight replaces previous screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt Gibson on the Star Wars project. This makes sense for Lucasfilm, which is trying to perfect Star Wars for the big screen. Knight recently wrote the critically acclaimed Angelina Jolie film “Maria,” which will be screened at AFI Fest on Saturday night, and is currently working on the feature film “Peaky Blinders.”
The next Star Wars movie is The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau and based on the popular Disney+ series. Favreau and Dave Filoni co-wrote the script, and Sigourney Weaver and Pedro Pascal starred. This summer’s D23 features appearances by Babu Frik, shots of AT-ATs on snowy planets like The Empire Strikes Back, and red aliens from the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Short videos were shown, including a Zeb with pointy ears.
