Sky NZ and BYUtv in the US have jointly ordered a second season of Libertine Pictures’ live-action family adventure series Secrets at Red Rocks.
The first season, which was nominated for three Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, was based on Kiwi author Rachel King’s novel Red Rocks. In the next work, new characters will appear and the world will further expand.
Production begins this week in Wellington, with deliveries scheduled for October. This season, core cast members Corban Noch, Dominic Ona Aliki, Zeta Sutherland and Jim Moriarty return, and they are joined by veteran actor Alison Bruce.
The show will once again be helmed by director and producer David Stubbs and executive producer Richard Fletcher, managing director of Libertine Pictures. The series was developed for television by Martha Hardy Ward, who leads a writing team that includes Steph Matouk, Helen Pearce-Otten, and Matthew Wittet.
“Season 2 continues and grows on the strong foundations of the first series. The world expands, the mythology deepens, and the relationships at the heart of the stories become even more compelling,” Fletcher said.
Nick Ward, senior commissioner of Sky NZ Originals, added: “This is a uniquely New Zealand story with universal appeal. Sky is proud to support the new season and bring viewers even more of the magic that made season one such a success.”
Andra Duke, head of content at BYUtv, said the series resonated with American viewers because of its “relatable characters, breathtaking scenery, vibrant fantasy, and heartfelt moments of family bonding and forgiveness.”
International distribution is again handled by WildBrain. New Zealand On Air provided the investment and New Zealand screen production rebates were cash flowed from Hinterland.
