SBS On Demand and Docplay will be presenting the work of nearly 40 students from Australia’s Film and Television and Radio School (AFTRS) this month as part of their ongoing partnership with the facility.
15 Short Documentaries: Production Students Premiere at SBS On Demand by AFTRS Bachelor of Arts Screens, and 6 Short Documentaries: Documentary Students and Alumni will screen Docplay, produced by AFTRS Master of Arts Screens.
Students at AFTRS Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production were invited to submit a short form of documentary from a part of an on-screen underrated society to explore the contemporary Australian perspective.
One of the films, the last emperor of Chinatown won Australia’s best documentary film award at the doc.sydney festival. Written and directed by Tyler Kang, both produced by Paris Piccolo, an AFTRS BA student.
Of the titles to play on Docplay, Lucien Jones’ Empress, produced by Chayly Moek, premiered at this year’s Mardi Gras Film Festival.
SBS On Demand and World Movies programmer Alex Walkden said that the short film was expected, provoked, challenged, and challenged with “purpose and originality.”
“SBS On Demand is excited to continue its ongoing partnership with AFTRS to provide a bold, boundary-rich collection of clearly Australian stories,” he said.
“Each project is a testament to the creativity of emerging Australian documentary makers, and we are constantly inspired by the unique voice and fresh perspective they bring to screens, and this year’s showcase is no exception, a vibrant lineup that calls for attention and promises impact.
Docplay executive Rufus Richardson reiterated his feelings, praised the filmmakers for exploring “a variety of topics and issues relating to empathy, compassion and insight.”
“As Australia’s only dedicated documentary streaming service, DocPlay is excited to work with AFTRS again to bring this fun, informative collection of short documentaries to Australian audiences,” he said.
“The quality of the emerging talent in this showcase stood out from the start.”
Richard Welch, a documentary for AFTRS Discipline Lead, said he worked with SBS On Demand and Docplay to shape the future of Australian documentary storytelling.
“The dynamic world of documentary filmmaking is important for AFTRS to provide real-world audit preparation channels, and to strengthen equipment to meet the industry’s rapidly evolving needs, where students are ready for the future,” he said.
The AFTRS Documentary Showcase will be available for free streaming on SBS On Demand and DocPlay starting June 26th.
